Dusk Till Dawn Grand Prix breaks European land based record!

Grand Prix V smashes the European Land Based Record as Michael Webber takes 1st for €18,000!

The Dusk Till Dawn Poker Grand Prix V exceeded the €100,000 guarantee, generating a final prize pool of €104,450 and a first prize of €21,223. The event, with a buy-in of €50, broke the European landed based record for biggest poker field with a total of 2089 entries (1,256 unique entries), the third time that the Grand Prix has exceeded the current record.

2 out of the original 250 Golden Chip entries made it through to Day 3. Unfortunately neither of them made the final table, so therefore missed out on the opportunity to exchange their Golden Chip for a new Mini Cooper car.

The Grand Prix hosted 7 Live Day 1’s, with players able to re-enter into another Day 1 if they were eliminated from the field. These flights ran from Sat 14th January through to Friday 20th January. Our largest field came on Day 1g when 472 were whittled down to the 94 who joined the other 270 for Day 2.

From 2,089 entrants we saw 364 players progress into Day 2, paying 207 places. At the start of Day 2, Simon Trumper announced the tournament clock was to be rolled back a level – an announcement that was greeted with a thankful round of applause from all remaining players.

The unfortunate bubble boy, finishing in 208th position, was Lee Williamson. He got it in with AhKh on a Kd-Jh-6h board, just to find himself up against Kc-Jc. Turn was the Js, and no help on the river eliminated Williamson.

With 47 players remaining we moved onto the 3rd and Final Day on Sunday 22nd January. All players in Day 3 started with a guaranteed payout of €350 – a tidy sum for a slender €50 investment.

The final 8 players were; Going into this Final Table Nigel Ventre had a commanding chip lead with over one third of the chips in play. The only other player with a stack above average was Sigurd Madsen, who had in fact missed his flight home to Norway so he could play the final. His loyal friends did the same and stayed to join the rail.

The Final Table lasted for a staggering 5 hours and despite Ventre holding the chip lead early on he managed a 3rd place finish for €7,509. We were now heads up with Webber and Madsen remaining, Madsen with a very slight chip advantage. After playing for an hour and a half they decided to make a deal, securing €15,000 a piece with just over €3,000 left to play for.

This Heads Up affair was a grinding one, as both players were more than competent. Eventually Madsen was grinded down to 8 big blinds. Webber opened the button, Madsen shoved with Ac4c and was called by Webber’s AhJh. Webber’s hand was able to hold, winning himself €18,000 – an incredible pay day for a €50 entry fee, with the Australian taking home the title.

Simon Trumper, Live Poker Director, was very pleased with how the January Grand Prix played out, “We tweaked a few things, including rolling back the blinds on Day 2 to give more play. The Grand Prix is a unique concept and I want to continue developing the player experience. We have already announced the next Grand Prix in April and we are going to promote our Caribbean Poker Party by giving away 1,000 Golden Chips online – any Golden Chip winner to reach the final table will win a £6000 package. We want to continue breaking records with this event and its great to see so many new faces at Dusk Till Dawn. At €50, the Grand Prix is all about giving the recreational players the opportunity to play a good structure and get massive value for a modest investment. We are planning to do a Grand Prix final towards the end of the year with a slightly higher buy-in, but the April and July Grand Prix will both be at €50.”
