Best way to play at WSOP* 2011
There will be very few poker players out there who do not share the common dream of flying into Las Vegas, Nevada in the heat of summer to rub shoulders and do battle with some of the game's biggest names and stand the chance of winning a life-changing sum of money - and of course a coveted bracelet - at the World Series of Poker. The problem most of these dreamers face is how to afford to play in any of the WSOP* 2011 events because even the more budget friendly $1,500 tournaments would put a massive dent into a players bankroll. In fact if you take the average bankroll kept by tournament players as being 150 buy-ins then to be properly bankrolled to play the $1,500 events a player would need $225,000 available and there are very few players in the world who have that sort of money laying around.
So short of winning the lottery how does the average man or women get to play at the upcoming WSOP? The most common way is through the various satellite tournaments that are run in the run up to the World Series of Poker. Thanks to online poker, these tournaments run daily right up to a couple of days before the start of the $10,000 Main Event and often start with entry fees of around $1 and sometimes even less. Last year's Main Event saw 7,319 players take part and it was reported that well over half of the field won their seat from online poker satellite tournaments.
Another way would be to try and sell a percentage of your action, something that is common practice amongst poker players. To sell a piece of your action you basically divide the entry fee up into percentage and one of your friends or someone willing to buy a piece, purchases some of you and if you win then you owe them that percentage of your winnings. For example, you enter a $2,000 and sell 50% of your action for $1,000. You then go onto win $10,000 so you have to pay out $5,000. Another variation of this is to swap percentages so you swap 10% of yourself for 10% of a fellow player. This is a great way to lower your exposure in poker tournaments and can allow you to play in higher buy-in tournaments than your bankroll would usually allow.
